It was a great idea that we discussed our creative and different ways to fit the standards as a class. It is also good for me to personally see how reading and writing could be incorporated in so many different ways. I would like to remember everyone in the class’ lesson plans because they were all very creative and fun to do. I propose that you post all of the lesson plans on WebCt since you are getting them all electronically; I think we would really benefit from all of these different teaching techniques.
It is very fun learning more and new information because you can relate it to our daily lives. What I mean is in particular is that I always seem to be reminded of James Gee book especially the term the “affinity group.” It seems like I have many different affinity groups and I always want to tell the people in them that they are in my affinity group. The digital documentary was hard for me to do because I wanted to get my point across and I wanted it to be funny but it was very hard to accomplish when I really did not know how to work the program. It was a good learning process though in the end. Then we read all of the different articles on WebCt; they were very knowledgeable and informal articles that because they are on WebCt I can always go and use them as references. I have actually already used the articles in several different papers. In the beginning of the class I was scared of the importance of the class but now as I come to an end I really appreciate the different types of work we accomplished and I know that I will use what I have learned in this class in the years to come.

Reflection

Our group worked together in building our paper. In class we decided what were the best ideas of each of the articles. This worked out really nicely because we could tell each other what were great articles and informative and what we did not like. This saved a lot of time. Also we worked collaboratively on starting our papers. All of these articles were very informative to read because they help us with writing as well as how good teachers teach. The first item that they talked about was the words that the spellchecker won’t check. Most of these words I had a hard time spelling and if I spelt them wrong it would tell me the two words that seemed the same. Also the one word or two section of the guide book was something that I have a hard time with because I usually spell each other as one word instead of two. This is a great guide book to have so that I as a writer can look up miss spelled or miss defined words. Another subject that the authors brought up in the book was complete and compound sentences it is just good to go back to see what went wrong and how to fix it with examples shown in this book.

Article Review

So far I have read three of the four articles and there is one that stands out of all of them. I really enjoyed article number three of set four. It is called “Tensing Up” a teacher explains what makes a good writer they need to have fluency as well as an audience. This really helped me see what would help young students become better writers and that is to show tension. If you have tension like a problem or situation then the reader will be more interested in the story. The teacher in this article gave some great teaching tools that helped the students see visually what they needed to work on and that was to show interest for the reader. Another article that I had read had the students in the classroom be part of a community everyone even the teacher was apart of the same community. The teacher would teach some writing skills to the class and soon the students in the classroom would start teaching each other writing skills because they were part of a community. It seems like all of the articles that I have read to far have shown a different idea in learning and that is to treat each student individually and to invest in them. What I mean by invest is to know about the child’s life in and outside of school and to have the child feel that you really care about them. By doing this the student will feel more comfortable and want to write because they won’t be scared of writing and become comfortable or even confident.

Reification

First, I decided to do the pictures of Frisbee gulf I took a lot of them on different cameras and had different people take pictures for me. I gave them an idea of what I wanted and they did a pretty good job with taking pictures. I went up to the Frisbee gulf course in Orville once, this is not where I usually would go but Tom, my boyfriend, wanted to see what it had to offer. It was not as nice as the Bidwell’s course up off Hwy 32. Most of my pictures were of me and Tom and his roommates up at Bidwell’s course, not much was at the Orville course. It was hard to decide how to write my script. What would make most people interested in Frisbee gulf was it the game alone or was it why I decided to play and how I learned how to play the game. I decided it was the second part on why and how I learned how to play. I had about six minutes of speech that I did on gabcast and probably messed up on my recording about eleven times. I had chosen many different songs but some were too short or too loud or just not available. I think the major problem with making this video was having Tom and his roommates see the finished product because it was mostly about them and I told them it was only about how to play Frisbee gulf. I conquered my fear and showed Tom my finished product he enjoyed it and said he wanted a copy. My last and final situation was cutting out a lot of my speech. I thought that the end of my documentary was getting a little boring or uninteresting I had five and half minutes all together and I cut it down to two and half minutes this was a hard decision for me but I feel more confident in my final product because of it.

Where I am...

Where I am so far….

I have collected many photos of myself as well as many pictures of my boyfriend and his roommates all playing Frisbee gulf. I have done a rough draft on what I am going to say but it is truly a rough draft. I understand and know how to put the sound of my voice to the video and that is what I have to do next. I have my pictures all laid out with music on the windows movie maker. I just need to sit down and start talking to myself about what I am doing. I really should have done this already but this is the scary part for me and I am not sure how I am going to talk because I want it to be at least a little bit funny and entertaining to the masses. He gives several examples about different games that have cultural models in them. The first example that Gee gives is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. You the player can play the “good guy” Sonic, or the “bad guy” Shadow. You as the video game player are allowed to choose the path of either player. In doing this it does mean that the player will have to choose either perspective; Sonic or Shadow. This is what a cultural modal is it is choosing two different but similar modals. A text definition is, “…images, story lines, principles, or metaphors that captures what a particular group finds “normal” or “typical” in regard to a given phenomenon (143).” So, who really is the “good guy” and the “bad guy” when you are playing as Shadow because you as the player wants to win and defeat who ever is in your way this means that you are the hero or heron of the story when you are playing. This is a very interesting idea that I never would have thought about but makes complete sense. When you play a video game you want to be the winner and complete it no matter if you are the “bad guy” in someone else’s eyes.

Situated Learning

In chapter four, James Gee, brings up many different terms that enhance others learning abilities during video games and incorporating learning into the real world, like with classrooms. One term that really stood out was, “Intuitive Knowledge Principle” were the child learns knowledge about science or any subject and the child comes out of the class with no real understanding or “tacit knowledge.” Gee explains, that schools do not support this type of knowledge; when the student can do an experiment and seem to understand it but then when they take a test the student does not pass. The other term relates with the last and that is “Multimodal Principle,” this term means that the students do not only know and understand the words of a particular subject but in order to fully comprehend the subject the students need to know different items related to the subject. For example, the book gives examples for these different items like: “images, texts, symbols, interactions, abstract designs, sound, etc” (111).

Video Games

In chapter one, the author really speaks to the reader. He could describe ideas and really get his point across. When I read the title it did not appeal to me at first, but once I read the chapter I could see what James Gee is trying say. Gee shows through many different examples that people learn in different ways. He says that when people read the Bible some read it literally, religiously, or read it as theology. Gee also mentions that everyone is different and so everyone reads differently. Some may read as a mother, a student, a Catholic and so on. Gee gives an example; comparing botanists and landscape architects. “Their different contexts, social practices, and purposes shape their thinking (and reading) in different ways (3).” So everyone has “multiple identities” and that is just being a part of the world and becoming an individual. By being an individual you can read and write and view things completely different than someone your same age or someone having the same major.

Skeet Shooting

Over the winter break I learned something new that was an entirely new experience for me. I learned how to shoot skeet. I believe most people know about shooting skeet, but if some of you don’t, it is trying to hit a clay disk some call it a clay pigeon with a shot gun, you get three rounds. It is very excited once you have hit the skeet and once you have you are considered a hero. Or if you’re like me, you receive an, “Ohhh, you just missed it,” when really you never even saw the disk at all. In order to do well you need to have a good eye and a steady hand. Since it was Christmas day, we were all celebrating at least everyone around me had a few to drink. This made my learning experience of skeet shooting a little harder and scarier. Maybe next time I try skeet shooting it won’t be on a holiday.

My first posting

I am ready to become an amazing writer!
